Record Description | A varied relict cliff tree flora which includes very large and ancient yew trees, a solitary juniper bush, rowan, hawthorn, rose, elder and a solitary gooseberry bush, which may be the highest gooseberry bush in Yorkshire if not in the world! These trees grow on the face of a highly exposed west facing cliff formed by the Main Limestone with overlying chert strata
Common tree and shrub species present:
Yew, hazel, rowan, elder. hawthorn, rose, ivy.
Common flowering plant species present:
Dog's mercury (Mercurialis perennis) in scree, lords and ladies (Arum maculatum),cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis), hawkweeds (Hieracium sp), Biting stonecrop (Sedum acre), dandelions (Taraxacum sp), thyme, wood sage,limestone bedstraw, ragwort. (As seen in early Spring.)
Wall rue (two plants in crevice at base of cliff), Brittle baldder fern (single plant, ditto), Maidenhair spleenwort.
Common tree species absent: Wych elm. Ash. (Wych elm is present 500m to the east, on the scar on the west side of the Hind Rake Vein.)
Scarce plants present:
Juniper, probably the prostrate form. J.comm. ssp nana. Single bush on face of scar, severely cut back since photographed in May 2006.
Spring sandwort (Minuartia verna) on lead mining ground above the Scar.
Alpine penny cress. (Thlaspi caerulescens), near flush above the Scar.
Moonwort. (Asplenium ruta-muria), on lead mining ground above the Scar.

Additional Notes | Fell End Scar is a sheer and dangerous limestone cliff and should on no account be approached from above.
The yew trees can best be viewed in safety from the wide grass terrace below the cliff.
